First, contact your representatives!
Virginia state law does not allow citizens to use a petition process to put legislation or constitutional amendments on a statewide ballot. Thus, it is only via DIRECT democracy -- letting them know how you feel about an issue -- that we can win reform of our outdated laws. Always be courteous, get quickly to the point, and do not hesitate to write them on a periodic basis. Best of all, try to set up an in-person appointment in their regional office (when they are not in Richmond.) In this manner, you can build a relationship with your reps that will pay dividends down the road when a reform bill comes before them.

At the federal level, we must convince our Senators and House representatives that the time has come (long ago!) to remove cannabis from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. This is sometimes referred to as "rescheduling" the substance. Even Schedule II is more restrictive than cannabis merits, but it would allow a LOT more research to be conducted. And we all know what will happen once more facts are known...

Finally... join Virginia NORML! Even if you don't have time to attend monthly meetings, social gatherings, and community activities, you can become a contributing member -- your payment will support the important work that we do, and you will remain in the loop so that you don't miss out on any exciting happenings. This represents an incredibly small investment in the future, since even one conviction for possession can ruin your life or that of a loved one. Let's join our efforts and funds to end prohibition in Virginia!
