How to Register for Virginia’s Medical Cannabis Program

No Registration Required

Pursuant to HB 933/SB 671, patient registration is no longer be required as of July 1, 2022. Once a patient receives their written certification from a registered practitioner they will be able to shop at Virginia dispensaries. Please pre-register with the dispensaries at which you plan to shop to reduce patient wait times.

Medical Cannabis Registration for Patients, Parents/Legal Guardians

To register with the Board of Pharmacy you will need to apply as a Registered Patient For Cannabis Oil or Registered Parent/Guardian of Cannabis OilYou must first obtain a valid written certification from a Board of Pharmacy-registered practitioner prior to applying for registration as a patient or parent/guardian to possess medical cannabis products. Find a registered practitioner.

The Department of Health Professions primarily licenses and regulates healthcare practitioners by their profession type. Although you are not seeking a professional license, you may encounter this terminology throughout the registration process. The registration directions below should reduce any confusion and assist you to complete the process accurately

Medical Cannabis Registration for Registered Agents

Registration is only required for parents/legal guardians and registered agents of a patient if the practitioner did not include their name on the written certification. Up to two parents/legal guardians and one registered agent can be on a written certification. If a patient, or a patient’s parent or legal guardian, has requested that you act as their registered agent to received cannabis products for them, you can be listed on the patient's written certification. Certifying Practitioners may add this information during the patient consult or may reissue an updated written certification. You may only act as a registered agent for two patients at any given time. If the name of the registered agent is not recorded on the patient's written certification, then the registered agent must first register with the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority prior to picking up or receiving medical cannabis on behalf of the patient.
